Before paper as we knew it existed, people communicated and petitioned through a variety of means. Although it is undeniable how the art of crafting paper facilitated a flourishing in literary creativity and written spell workings, petitions, or in other words, a personal statement of magical intent or desire, have continuously been ritually created and used as a spiritual tool for the everyday practitioner. Nowadays, our communications, stories, and magical history are inexpensively copied and more easily accessible to the general public. Nevertheless, paper begins as a blank and recycled canvas, growing old as we do, bearing the marks of a lifelong journey, influenced with the energetics we place into the written word.

Are you curious about the history of paper in spell crafting and the importance it provided to modern workings, alongside a demonstration on how to make ritual papers for yourself? Join artist Nathaniel Drake for a tutorial and hands-on demonstration into the craft, from insight into the materials necessary, to blending, coloring with pigments, fiber options, herbal inclusions, sheet forming and drying techniques. Learn the way recycling has always been a part of papermaking, and the life-long historical diffusion of an ancient technique. Experience the ways paper’s characteristics are shaped by the way it has been made, which allows a completely unique personality to emerge, imparting all the more potency into our magical workings. All materials included, no supplies necessary.

Nathaniel Drake is a queer/non-binary artist and herbalist whose interest in herbalism arose out of immutable gratitude for the healing quality of the natural world. From earliest memories spent outdoors with the many beautiful sticks, and stones, herbs, mosses, and multifarious mycological mysteries with whom we coexist, curiosity bloomed all the more when presented with the prospect of interning at a local apothecary throughout most of high school. It was there where Nathaniel encountered some of their earliest mentors, learned the basics, and started accumulating knowledge regarding the medicinal and spiritual qualities of the ecosphere. Linking deep passions from within those early elemental mysteries of adolescence. Following graduation, Nathaniel journeyed to Ireland to attend an apprenticeship intensive in spiritual herbalism before briefly relocating to NYC to continue their educational pursuits in the healing arts. Nathaniel believes there is great importance in sharing and providing to the community directly the expanse of plant knowledge available, while also perpetuating deep respect for the many cultural traditions from which our closest of herbal allies originated. Outside of work, you’ll find Nathaniel alone in the woods, growing and wildcrafting, formulating remedies, journaling, making art, or simply seated by the fire with their cats and a good book, always devoted to furthering their study and practice.
