The marigolds are native to the Americas and Rue is a Southern European plant. This doesn’t stop the two from working beautifully side by side.
These plants play in the liminal space between the living and dead. Rue is toxic and medicinal (if used very carefully and under an herbalist’s supervision). The aroma of marigold is said to be the only scent the dead can smell. These plants are intoxicating. Rue has been used as an abortant for centuries. It has allowed women, who were willing to use it’s medicine, a bit of control over their own fate. Beautiful giant marigolds adorn graveyards all over Mexico and their cousin marigolds aid journey and dream work.
These herbs hide in the space between magic, medicine and toxicity; between the living and dead and they exemplify the magic of our current American story. We are all feeling displaced but when we respect our indigenous neighbors and collaborate with true respect, Big magic is possible.

Winter is an ideal time for us to dream up our garden plans for the upcoming growing season. This unique series of classes centers the witch’s garden through the lenses of magic, herbalism, gardening tips, and earth stewardship.
Each class offers a deep dive on different harmonious pairings of plants along with preparations made with many of the plants discussed. Participants will take home samples of these preparations to further enhance their studies and build their own personal plant spirit apothecary and grimoire pages for each of these plants.

Michelle VanderHouwen is the owner of Oak and Hawthorn and provides the plant babies for Ritualcravt’s annual plant sale.

Throughout all her years, she has studied art as a window into Spirit and the psyche, and Nature has been her church. Michelle believes that our hands are magnificent communicators. When we let them dig, sculpt, draw, scrape, tie and sew, we are sending messages to and from Heart Center. Our hands, full of sensation but devoid of reasoning, can create pure, honest prayer. In Michelle’s classes she teaches, with a variety of tools, different ways of accessing Spirit using our hands and hearts. Her goal is to help us all access the knowing we had at birth. Michelle is deeply knowledgeable about the spiritual wisdom of nature, studied Shamanic Herbalism with Darcey Blue, and walks with the soul of a Witch.
