One of the most sinister and elusive figures in Irish literature and mythology, The Morrígan is regarded as a goddess of death, warfare, and destruction. She is often described as a scald-crow hovering over the battlefield foretelling victory and defeat; however, this enigmatic goddess has many forms: crow, wolf, owl, cow, and eel. Each of these avatars offers insight into the distinct roles that The Morrígan has played throughout history, however they may also provide a starting point to begin understanding the unique nature of the goddess herself. In this in-person, discussion-based class we will explore how The Morrígan’s appearance as an eel in the Irish epic Táin Bó Cúailnge provides unique insight into Her nature and role. Students will be invited to bring questions as we explore themes of personal sovereignty, bodily autonomy, navigating transition, existing in the liminal, and the ways that death and destruction are a necessary part of the human experience.

Michelle VanderHouwen
Michelle VanderHouwen is the owner of Oak and Hawthorn and provides the plant babies for Ritualcravt’s annual plant sale.
Throughout all her years, she has studied art as a window into Spirit and the psyche, and Nature has been her church. Michelle believes that our hands are magnificent communicators. When we let them dig, sculpt, draw, scrape, tie and sew, we are sending messages to and from Heart Center. Our hands, full of sensation but devoid of reasoning, can create pure, honest prayer. In Michelle’s classes she teaches, with a variety of tools, different ways of accessing Spirit using our hands and hearts. Her goal is to help us all access the knowing we had at birth. Michelle is deeply knowledgeable about the spiritual wisdom of nature, studied Shamanic Herbalism with Darcey Blue, and walks with the soul of a Witch.

James Matson is an artist, craftsman, researcher, and psychotherapist living in Denver, CO. He has studied and worked with The Morrígan for almost a decade, primarily practicing magic in the style of his ancestors from Ireland, Scotland, and the British Isles. Since James completed his undergraduate degree in comparative religion, he has continued to delve into the spiritual practices of his ancestors, integrating scholarship and emphasizing the use of primary sources whenever possible. In his clinical work as a psychotherapist, James specializes in gender, sexuality, trauma and abuse, and questions of identity and belonging. He holds masters degree in both clinical mental health counseling and research methods and statistics, and is a self proclaimed nerd.
