Many traditions have utilized the power of keeping a record, for the desire to account for the details of our lives is as old as handwriting itself! From documentation of personal practice to interactions with oneself, and observances of the natural or spiritual world. Ever looked through an old journal of your own, or perhaps even that of a loved one? You enter a fully different dimension. You see through old dates and inscriptions, sentiments, ideas, dreams, and recollections. The inner workings of all of the various contributors of personal history. As you lift it, its heft corroborates its importance. The rigid selection of recycled papers boldly announces that you are the proprietor of this journal. The sturdiness suggests that future generations will access and glean insight from your experiences contained within. Yet the practice of keeping and working with such journals is a lost art, overlooked within modernity, and all of the underwhelming mass-produced pages and digital diarists available at our fingertips.
Join artist Nathaniel Drake in an evening of magical crafting, to reinvigorate working with the hands, to impart potency into the thoughts and practices thereafter contained within the makings of your very own, completely unique, hand-made grimoire! Select your ideal pages to form into personalized chapters, make special cover boards and endpapers, and impart the finishing touches necessary to make it all the more favorable in your practice. All while simultaneously learning the history and basic techniques of bookbinding, alongside ritualistic methods and prompts for archive/journal work. Students will also be provided with a small toolkit containing the basic materials necessary to continue bookbinding outside of the classroom. All supplies are included in the class fee.
***Participants are more than welcome to bring along any with them special papers, photographs, collage material, etc. to incorporate into their creations! Although this is by no means a requirement, as there will be an abundance of variety in papers and mediums for use in class.
Nathaniel Drake is a queer/non-binary artist and herbalist whose interest in herbalism arose out of immutable gratitude for the healing quality of the natural world. From earliest memories spent outdoors with the many beautiful sticks, and stones, herbs, mosses, and multifarious mycological mysteries with whom we coexist, curiosity bloomed all the more when presented with the prospect of interning at a local apothecary throughout most of high school. It was there where Nathaniel encountered some of their earliest mentors, learned the basics, and started accumulating knowledge regarding the medicinal and spiritual qualities of the ecosphere. Linking deep passions from within those early elemental mysteries of adolescence. Following graduation, Nathaniel journeyed to Ireland to attend an apprenticeship intensive in spiritual herbalism before briefly relocating to NYC to continue their educational pursuits in the healing arts. Nathaniel believes there is great importance in sharing and providing to the community directly the expanse of plant knowledge available, while also perpetuating deep respect for the many cultural traditions from which our closest of herbal allies originated. Outside of work, you’ll find Nathaniel alone in the woods, growing and wildcrafting, formulating remedies, journaling, making art, or simply seated by the fire with their cats and a good book, always devoted to furthering their study and practice.
