Please ensure you are able to attend the scheduled class time. \nRegistration will close one hour prior to class starting. \n  \nWitchcraft and other magical approaches of the present day carry forward the idea that the natural world itself is enchanted\, from the plants below our feet\, to the animals we share the earth with\, to the winds\, stars\, and planets above us. \nNature is best experienced directly\, therefore this class will provide frameworks for encountering the magical side of nature in all its beauty and ferocity\, as well as strategies for keeping ourselves protected while we encounter the wild other. \nConcepts like the Elements\, the “Energy” in plants and people\, as well as the theories that explain the efficacy of Astrology are all born from a movement in the history of occult thinking called “Natural Magic”. The history of this movement is often forgotten today\, yet Natural Magic ideas form the basis of Witchcraft\, Folk Magic\, and many other forms of magical practice. \nFrom the middle ages to the renaissance\, the concept of “Natural Magic” arose in the work of magical writers like Cornelius Agrippa\, Hildegard of Bingen\, Al Kindi\, & Paracelsus. These writers’ perspectives often clashed with religious authorities even as they moved in tandem with proto-scientific investigations of the natural world. \nThis class will celebrate the forgotten history of the Natural Magic texts which form the backbone of witchcraft and magical thought today\, and introduce the broad strokes of several thinkers of the past around the Natural Magic concept\, along with providing many threads for further exploration by the curious. \nOn a practical\, hands-on level\, this class will investigate the connections between organic magical materials and their spirits\, as well as the ways magic practitioners interact within the interconnected web of beings that make up our world in order to weave the stories they wish to create. \n“The soul is a breath of living spirit that permeates the entire body to give it life. In the same way\, the breath of the air makes the earth fruitful with plants. Thus the air is the soul of the earth\, moistening it\, greening it.” \nHildegard of Bingen \n“The art of healing comes from nature\, not from the physician. Therefore the physician must start from nature\, with an open mind.” \n-Paracelsus \n  \nPhoebe Hildegard Finch is a traditionally trained conjurer\, card reader\, and writer.\nOriginally brought to earth after a series of baleful magical experiments\, she currently resides in Denton\, Texas as the live-in apprentice of Professor Charles Porterfield. A lifelong herbalist\, her work with plants is the loamy heart of her craft\, anchoring the arcane in the physical.
