DESCRIPTION:**PLEASE READ: This conference is not in-person\, all classes are virtual via ZOOM. All classes are in MST timezone. When you purchase the Conference Pass\, you will receive a separate email with zoom links to all classes in the series which you may attend live. NFTC begins June 2 and runs through June 8 with 1-2 classes per day\, pass students have access to all 12 classes in the conference. Conference Pass students will also have access to all class recordings after the conference for 30 days\, recordings will be available within about one week of the end of the conference. See our school calendar for all NFTC classes which may be purchased separately or you may purchase a Conference Pass for all classes at a discounted price.  \n\nNordic Totemism: Traditional Animal Kinship in Northern Europe:\n\n\nKinship with other-than-humans is a way for Animist traditions to inscribe human culture and community into the transformations and natural processes of the land. It is a way of learning the law of the land. This is also the case in Nordic Animism. This lecture gives a general presentation of animal kinship and presents some examples\, Stork\, Bear\, Cat\, Seal\, Elder and Raven. \n\nYOUR INSTRUCTOR: \nRune Hjarnø Rasmussen is Historian of Religion\, Ph.d from Uppsala University in Sweden. He is working as a public intellectual trying to retrieve forward rejected North European traditional knowledge and animism in order to open the possibility of landconnectivity and ancestrality for contemporary euro-descended people. \n*The Northern Folk Traditions Conference is a weeklong virtual conference taking place June 2-8! See our school calendar for all NFTC classes which may be purchased separately or you may purchase a Conference Pass for all classes at a discounted price.  \nRune Magic and Animism: \nIn the Old Norse worldview\, rune magic was an expression of animistic relationality with the seen and unseen forces in our world. Runes could be used as any letter system to write curses and spells\, but the letters themselves also contained magical powers. In this class\, we will learn about how the runes were used for magic\, and how they expressed a complete idea about the cosmological order of our existence. \nYOUR INSTRUCTOR: \nMathias Nordvig has a PhD in Old Norse literature with focus on Old Norse mythology. He teaches subjects on Old Norse literature and culture\, Nordic witchcraft and pre-Christian religion\, and Arctic cultures at the University of Colorado-Boulder. His primary research interests are critical whiteness studies\, the reception of Old Norse mythology in pop-culture and music\, and Old Norse mythology as a land-based conceptual framework for life in the pre-Christian North. \n*The Northern Folk Traditions Conference is a weeklong virtual conference taking place June 2-8!
