SUMMARY:The Animistic Worldview in Old Norse Mythology
DESCRIPTION:**PLEASE READ: This class is part of the Northern Folk Traditions Conference! This class is not in-person\, it is virtual via ZOOM. All classes are in MST timezone. You will receive a separate email with your zoom link. See our school calendar for all NFTC classes which may be purchased separately or you may purchase a Conference Pass for all classes at a discounted price.  \nThe Animistic Worldview in Old Norse Mythology: \nOld Norse mythology is rooted in the natural world of northern Europe. It expresses the experiences that northern peoples have had with the natural world for millennia. The surviving medieval literature on Old Norse mythology has retained much of this perspective\, especially in the Eddic poems Vafthrudnismal and Grimnismal. We will read these poems and analyze them as expressions of animistic relationality with the natural world. \nYOUR INSTRUCTOR: \nMathias Nordvig has a PhD in Old Norse literature with focus on Old Norse mythology. He teaches subjects on Old Norse literature and culture\, Nordic witchcraft and pre-Christian religion\, and Arctic cultures at the University of Colorado-Boulder. His primary research interests are critical whiteness studies\, the reception of Old Norse mythology in pop-culture and music\, and Old Norse mythology as a land-based conceptual framework for life in the pre-Christian North. \n*The Northern Folk Traditions Conference is a weeklong virtual conference taking place June 2-8! SUMMARY:Utiseta: Forging Bonds of Magical Power
DESCRIPTION:**PLEASE READ: This class is part of the Northern Folk Traditions Conference! This class is not in-person\, it is virtual via ZOOM. All classes are in MST timezone. You will receive a separate email with your zoom link. Students will also have access to a class recording after the conference for 30 days\, recordings will be available within about one week of the end of the conference. A separate email will be sent to you with links to the recording. See our school calendar for all NFTC classes which may be purchased separately or you may purchase a Conference Pass for all classes at a discounted price.  \n\n\nUtiseta: Forging Bonds of Magical Power:\n\n\n\nThe roots of folk magic is found among the patterns of nature; the stones and soil\, the trees and roots\, the mounds and cairns\, and in the wind and weather. Most wisdom cultures have systems for deepening perception of the natural world both inside and outside of us. Utiseta\, or “sitting out” is one such custom found in northern folk traditions. Engaging in this practice amplifies your capacity to forge authentic bonds with the great powers of the land.\n\n\nThis class will explore the old lore of sitting out on burial mounds as it has been passed through the ages\, a practice filled with relevancy for every magical practitioner. Equally\, we will learn an even deeper practice— complete perception of the energy\, spirits\, and patterns found in the natural world. We will discuss methods of sitting on the land\, communicating with elements\, the language of birds\, the indicators of ecology\, and how to walk the land in a sacred way. Ancient sorcerers\, farmers\, and healers knew how to listen to the wind\, smell the season\, taste when the harvest was ripe\, and influence forces of nature. Here\, we learn these practices of immersive nature awareness for the modern world. Here\, we will forge the threads of connection\, the reciprocity\, and the communication systems to fully integrate nature’s pattern to empower authentic sorcery.\n\n\n\nYOUR INSTRUCTOR: \nErik Ohlsen is a master of regenerative design\, an internationally recognized Permaculture teacher\, author\, farmer\, magical herbalist\, storyteller\, and practitioner of Nordic folk traditions.\nSince 1999 Erik has founded numerous organizations that regenerate ecosystems including his award winning design and build firm Permaculture Artisans and The Permaculture Skills Center where thousands of students around the world learn ecological landscaping and regenerative agriculture.\nWorking as an internationally renowned regenerative designer\, he has committed decades to repairing ecosystems and connecting people with the land throughout the globe. He has designed and implemented hundreds of regenerated landscapes ranging from small urban lots to large tracts of land.\nHis many years of experience observing and listening to landscape patterns while managing installation crews have led to an extensive knowledge of ecological land development and planning. He is a specialist in water harvesting systems\, food forest design\, community organizing\, facilitation\, vocational education and much more. In all of his work there is a presence of social equity\, climate justice\, and ecosystem restoration and his stories and achievements continue to empower people worldwide.\n*The Northern Folk Traditions Conference is a weeklong virtual conference taking place June 2-8! From the celestial elves\, known for their light\, enchantment\, and occasional blood sucking – to the surly & often deadly trolls that haunt majestic mountains. What sets these supernatural beings apart from each other – and from the average human ghost? How does the etiquette expected of humans’ interaction with them vary? Are the smith-master dwarves truly antisocial\, compared to the domestic tomte who frequents the homestead? What stellar bodies are sacred to trolls\, or are the stars solely the domain of elves? This presentation will explore the answers to these questions\, as well as how these extraordinary beings are approached(& avoided) in Scandinavia – including via the lens of the Norse folk magic & sorcery of Trolldom.\n\nYOUR INSTRUCTOR: \n\n\nRose is a sorceress\, seer\, and trollkvinna. Born into a lineage of Celtic fairy seership & witchcraft\, Rose has been interacting with spirits and practicing magic since a very young age. She has also apprenticed under Johannes Gårdbäck to learn the art of Trolldom\, a traditional system of Scandinavian folk magic & sorcery – of which she has been approved to do professional spiritual work for others as well as teach. She has also received training in other spiritual traditions\, including hoodoo/conjure\, as well as initiation into other lineages of traditional witchcraft. \nAs a professional sorceress\, Rose specializes in helping others with fairy\, elf\, and troll-related troubles. She also conducts readings and spellwork\, in addition to teaching the magical arts(including the development of mediumship & psychic abilities) to students of many magical backgrounds & various levels of experience. \n\n*The Northern Folk Traditions Conference is a weeklong virtual conference taking place June 2-8! People tend to stick to herbs and spices for their practice. \nThis class will introduce the three most popular herbs used by Swedish ancestors of the Tradition but will also introduce the three most popular in each of the following categories: trees\, roots\, resins\, seeds\, fungi\, berries/fruits\, grasses and lichens/mosses. These together form the heart of the traditional uses of plant material in Scandinavia and will provide the workshop participants with ideas and inspiration to further explore their own fauna. \n\nYOUR INSTRUCTOR: \n\n\nJohannes B. Gårdbäck is the author of “Trolldom – Spells and Methods of the Norse Folkmagic Tradition”\, (Y.I.P.P.I.E\, 2014).
