SUMMARY:{VIRTUAL} The Holly King and Oak King: Personification of the Seasons

Registration closes one hour prior to class beginning. \n  \nAs the seasons change from Autumn to Winter\, we see the shift in power from the Oak King to the Holly King. These two figures are shown in Celtic tradition as the transition from spring and summer to autumn and winter. We will examine how the Celtic folk viewed and celebrated these spiritual beings\, as well as the history of their respective counterparts. We will also discuss the simple rituals and festivals that go hand in hand with these concepts and how they relate to the modern world. \n  \nYOUR INSTRUCTOR \nGabriel Varzalyi-Lopez is a southern folk practitioner who is a devotee to his ancestors\, nature spirits\, and the God and Goddess of his mother and father. He is a seer\, diviner\, spiritual medium\, and conjuror trained here in New Orleans\, Louisiana. His practice and divinations have always been centered on community\, resilience\, and compassion. He has worked in New Orleans\, Denver\, and Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania\, where he currently calls home. Born into a lineage of witches\, orthodox priests\, farmers\, artists\, and rebels\, he understands the blessing that has been placed upon his shoulders. An adventurous spirit\, Gabriel feels and hears the call of Spirit through the wind and winding southern brooks\, and on the highest mountain peaks\, observing and watching the simple magics that each of us cherishes in our everyday lives.

SUMMARY:{VIRTUAL} Vampire Love Stories: Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Only Lovers Left Alive

Registration closes one hour prior to class beginning. \n  \nHaving taught several classes on these films apart from one another\, I thought that in honor of the current Halloween season I would offer a class covering both Bram Stoker’s Dracula (Dir. Francis Ford Coppola) and Only Lovers Left Alive (Dir. Jim Jarmusch)\, focusing in particular on the love stories at the heart of each film. Each story incorporates captivating themes\, such as forbidden love and cursed immortality\, as well as fairy-tale motifs and archetypes. In fact\, just as the world of fairy tales contains both classic and contemporary variants\, Count Dracula and Mina Harker’s love story is “classic”\, while Adam and Eve’s is “contemporary”\, utilizing post-modern elements and deconstructing various source texts. I’ll be talking about intertextuality\, looking at how each film references and reimagines literary inspirations\, costume design\, setting and atmosphere\, and what it is about these iconic relationships that holds us in thrall year after year\, sending us back for repeat viewings of our comfort films in which “Love never dies.” \n  \nYOUR INSTRUCTOR \nSusan Redington Bobby\, the founder of Professor of Words\, LLC\, is an online teacher\, a freelance editor\, a writing mentor\, and a tutor. Her specialty is being able to read people on a deeper level through their writing\, and she has recently completed a certificate course on integrative somatic trauma therapy.  She is a retired professor of English with expertise in fairy tales\, adolescent literature\, goddess archetypes\, magical realism\, creative writing\, and film studies. She is the author of Beyond His Dark Materials\, the editor of Fairy Tales Reimagined\, and co-editor of The Artemis Archetype in Popular Culture. The Series Editor of Tales from Fiddler’s Green\, she also occasionally publishes creative fiction. She is currently studying the Bardic Course in Druidry from OBOD. She maintains Mellie’s Grove\, a certified NWF backyard wildlife habitat that is home to a rescued and small stabilized cat family and all manner of wildlife.
