She doesn’t shy away from the trope of fortune teller. Sterling specializes in future-based readings. She’s had the ability to connect with spirits of the dead and the natural world since childhood and has been practicing folk magic since 2014. She is particularly influenced by her practice of and studies in the Scandinavian tradition of Trolldom. Registration closes one hour prior to class beginning. \n  \nYokai are supernatural entities from Japanese folklore.  They may take the form of apparitions\, creatures or phenomena.  In this class\, we will look at the spiritual frameworks that have led to our understanding of yokai\, how they have evolved through Japanese history leading up to pop culture depictions\, the different types of yokai and protective superstitions.  This class will include elements of storytelling to complement the lecture.  It is recommended\, but not mandatory to have taken Daily Japanese Animism & Majutsu as a primer for this class. \n  \nYOUR INSTRUCTOR \nAkemi Tsutsui-Kunitake is a visual artist\, karate-ka and creator of Live Deliciously. Based in Denver\, her work is informed by her identity as a third and fourth-generation (sansei-han and yonsei)\, mixed-race Japanese American. Her artwork blends themes of Japanese folklore with Western mysticism. She is inspired by the intersectionality of cultural tradition\, ancestral wisdom and modern identity. She is a lifelong student of Shotokan karate-do under the instruction of her father\, Isao Gary Tsutsui\, at Colorado Budokan. \nAkemi has also been fortunate to train with masters of other karate styles in California\, Hawaii and Japan. As karate embodies so many elements that are integral to the Japanese American experience\, she describes karate as her ethnic and spiritual identity in motion. With a formal education in Ethnic Studies\, Akemi has worked in the fields of culturally specific education\, advocacy and holistic health. She has continued her studies through courses on Japanese energetic healing\, Shinto\, deep ancestral work and radical community care. Akemi is a frequent collaborator with the Japanese Arts Network as a Cultural Consultant and artistic partner.

This meet-up is designed to be a facilitated space for those interested in tarot\, not a “class.” There will be two facilitators\, current readers here at Ritualcravt – Andrea Carla and Reese Quinn. \nTarot meet-ups will start and end with reflections on the past month’s tarot pulls\, a themed topic discussion\, and then will be driven by you! Your facilitators will be there to offer discussion areas\, hold space for questions\, encourage “practice” readings\, and provide time for intentional community building as it fits the group. \nPlease come with your tarot deck and your curiosity! \n  \nYOUR INSTRUCTORS: \nAndrea’s fascination with reading cards began from a young age after being introduced to the Smith-Waite Tarot. From then on\, she began to explore different methods of divination and fell in love with Lenormand\, a system of cartomancy originating in late 18th century Europe. Andrea’s style of reading cards could be described as pragmatic and deeply rooted in tradition\, influenced by a true reverence for the sibyls of the past. As a teacher\, Andrea has both an academic and scholarly approach to the way that she presents her classes as well as sharing from her experiences and gnosis as a professional reader. She considers the Tarot to be a book of esoteric mysteries and has spent years of her life in studying and peeling back its many layers to share the knowledge and wisdom embedded in every card. \nReese Quinn (she/they) is a tarot and astrology reader and what they lovingly call a practical witch. They have a strong awareness of the crossroads between astrology\, cartomancy\, and elemental practices. You’ll note that Reese embraces their queer\, intersectional identities when both teaching and reading. Reese has been a reader at Ritualcravt for over two years and has studied with well-known witches like Lindsay Mack and Pam Grossman and well-respected teachers locally in Denver. How can folk practitioners and witches interact with and petition these beings that are well-known for being Catholic? How does Saint magic interact with folk magic that is syncretized with Catholicism\, and can folks who aren’t Catholic even work with Saints? \nJoin Frankie Castanea for this virtual conversation into Saints as holy beings\, energetic signatures\, faces for earlier entities\, and their role in Italian-American and other folk magics. We will discuss who the Saints are\, how and why to approach as non Catholics\, separating Catholicism from the Church\, folk Catholicism as a method of folk magic\, and what Saints to petition and when. \nThis class is perfect for those who have some hesitation around folk Catholicism and Saint magic\, those interested in beginning to explore Saint work in their practice\, and those looking for practical\, folk-magic-centric ways of petitioning the Saints. We will talk further about utilizing Christian methods of talking to Saints\, but also methods that stem from folk magic and folk Catholicism\, beginning to incorporate Saints into your practice\, and more. \n  \nYOUR INSTRUCTOR \nFrankie Castanea\, also known as Chaotic Witch Aunt\, is a practicing folk witch\, animist\, Italian American folk practitioner\, and spirit worker.  They have been on a journey of reconnection to culture and ancestral practices for almost five years now\, a practicing witch and diviner for almost a decade. Within this\, they have found a passion for learning and teaching Italian-American ways of being\, animism\, ancestors\, and spirit relationships. They have and continue to be a student of Lisa Fazio and Mary Beth Bonfiglio\, and have\, in the past\, learned from Austin Toney of Cat and Cauldron. We are seeking self-care\, community\, and creative expression in a group that will welcome and encourage conversation and connection\, though there is no requirement to speak or to even have your screen on if you’d rather be anonymous and just “be” with us! \nLet’s face it\, our world demands constant productivity often for the sake of others. I often think that we are led to believe “how can we craft at a time like this?” But this is precisely the moment to engage in what makes us feel happy and at peace. We will reclaim the energy and beauty of crafting for the sake of personal fulfillment and relaxation. All skill levels and craft mediums are welcome in these gatherings that will be like book clubs\, but for crafts. We will set a theme for each session so you can consider it or even journal on it before attending\, and in our meetings\, you will have an opportunity to share with others\, if you choose\, while I will facilitate. Note that these are not lectures or classes but more like free-form meetings in a safe space\, with 3 price levels so you can choose what works best for you economically. \nOctober’s Theme:\nOrigin Tales: think about how you were drawn to the craft you’ll bring to this meeting. How did you discover this passion\, and what kind of role has it had in your life thus far? Did getting into this craft connect you to other people\, or do you enjoy it because it is a solitary activity alone? \nYOUR INSTRUCTOR \nSusan Redington Bobby\, the founder of Professor of Words\, LLC\, is an online teacher\, a freelance editor\, a writing mentor\, and a tutor. Her specialty is being able to read people on a deeper level through their writing\, and she has recently completed a certificate course on integrative somatic trauma therapy.  She is a retired professor of English with expertise in fairy tales\, adolescent literature\, goddess archetypes\, magical realism\, creative writing\, and film studies. She is the author of Beyond His Dark Materials\, the editor of Fairy Tales Reimagined\, and co-editor of The Artemis Archetype in Popular Culture. Registration closes one hour prior to class starting. \n  \nAs a very devoted cat mom\, it’s a little surprising to me that I didn’t come up with this class idea before!! I will do a deep dive into the meaning and mythology of Bastet\, and explore her history\, symbolism\, power\, and protection as a way to help us strengthen our connection to her. We will also learn some ritual ideas and spellwork that will call to her and bring her into our lives (and the lives of our cats). As someone who has had a relationship with her for years\, I am happy to relate some stories of how she has shown up for me and mine and been a great comfort when I have had to help any of my little ones cross the veil. As our class meeting approaches\, I encourage you to think about any times that she may have shown herself to you and your cats\, and to feel free to relate those stories in our class. \nThis class is taught in honor of Odysseus\, a feral cat whose story you will learn\, since my first deep connection with her came when he needed help most. His earthly body is no more\, but his spirit combined with hers protects our home. \n  \nYOUR INSTRUCTOR \nSusan Redington Bobby\, the founder of Professor of Words\, LLC\, is an online teacher\, a freelance editor\, a writing mentor\, and a tutor. Her specialty is being able to read people on a deeper level through their writing\, and she has recently completed a certificate course on integrative somatic trauma therapy.  She is a retired professor of English with expertise in fairy tales\, adolescent literature\, goddess archetypes\, magical realism\, creative writing\, and film studies. We will touch on a bit of animal symbolism\, mythology\, and energies\, how to sustainably and legally source animal materia (if you wish to do so)\, and how to practically incorporate animal magic into your own magical practice. \nThis class will not follow the typical guides to animal magic. Jess takes a more scientific approach\, one of correlation\, study\, and research. Often\, we turn to books and the writings of others when we are new to a subject\, which is a very important way to begin learning and start building a framework for your practice\, however during this lesson\, we will dive deeper. We will work on how to more heavily rely on our own intuition\, observation\, and personal experiences in order to develop meaningful relationships to the animal world. \nMost of us live in urban environments\, surrounded by concrete and landscaped city parks\, and it may seem almost impossible to find the truly natural world in our surroundings. There is some truth to this\, the contemporary world feels so disconnected from the wild that our ancestors knew. But honestly\, nature surrounds us\, all we need is a shift of perspective. Sit outside anywhere on a nice day\, even deep in the city\, and you will find resilience in nature. Plants growing through concrete\, beetles dutifully searching for food\, and stray cats or dogs surviving despite it all. It is so wonderful and healing to get deep into the mountains of our state\, hearing the calls of native birds that sound exotic to city dwellers\, or witnessing a family of deer beyond the trees along a trail… but there is something equally as wondrous about watching city crows scavenge from dumpsters behind a restaurant\, or butterflies and bees pollinating the carefully curated gardens in a city square. These are the lessons that we need right now. We are all dutifully surviving in the circumstances of the contemporary world at this moment\, and the animals that have been nearly pushed out by human civilization have been doing this for much longer. \nFollowing the lecture\, we will be practicing our observational and intuitive skills by connecting with animal materia first-hand. You will also be provided with several materials to create your own charm bag to honor and harness the spirit of the silk moth\, working with the energies of metamorphosis and adaptability. Animal\, herbal\, and mineral materials will be provided for you to choose from. It is not required\, but feel free to bring materials from your personal collection to add to your own bag. \nIt is highly recommended to bring a journal\, notebook\, or piece of paper and a writing utensil. This meet-up is designed to be a facilitated space for those interested in tarot\, not a “class.” There will be two facilitators\, current readers here at Ritualcravt – Andrea Carla and Reese Quinn. \nTarot meet-ups will start and end with reflections on the past month’s tarot pulls\, a themed topic discussion\, and then will be driven by you! We will go over folk magic and more with emphasis on the ancestors as we near the end of the autumn and move closer to wintertide.
