They may take the form of apparitions\, creatures or phenomena. In this class we will look at the spiritual frameworks that have led to our understanding of yokai\, how they have evolved through Japanese history leading up to pop culture depictions\, the different types of yokai and protective superstitions. This class will include elements of storytelling to complement the lecture. It is recommended\, but not mandatory to have taken Daily Japanese Animism & Majutsu as a primer for this class. \nAkemi Tsutsui-Kunitake is a visual artist\, karate-ka and creator of Live Deliciously. Based in Denver\, her work is informed by her identity as a third and fourth-generation (sansei-han and yonsei)\, mixed-race Japanese American. Her artwork blends themes of Japanese folklore with Western mysticism. She is inspired by the intersectionality of cultural tradition\, ancestral wisdom and modern identity. She is a lifelong student of Shotokan karate-do under the instruction of her father\, Isao Gary Tsutsui\, at Colorado Budokan.\nAkemi has also been fortunate to train with masters of other karate styles in California\, Hawaii and Japan. As karate embodies so many elements that are integral to the Japanese American experience\, she describes karate as her ethnic and spiritual identity in motion. With a formal education in Ethnic Studies\, Akemi has worked in the fields of culturally specific education\, advocacy and holistic health. She has continued her studies through courses on Japanese energetic healing\, Shinto\, deep ancestral work and radical community care. Akemi is a frequent collaborator with the Japanese Arts Network as a Cultural Consultant and artistic partner.

Many of these festivals include the visitation of spirits to the earthly realm to visit relatives. Obon is one of these festivals and is among the most sacred and widely practiced Japanese summer traditions. In this class we will look at the history of the festival\, the rituals practiced and how it appears in other East Asian cultures. One of the primary rituals of Obon is to dance in community to welcome the spirits of the dead. Please ensure you are able to attend the scheduled class time. \n\n\n\n\nSpiders have long inspired fear or repulsion\, most of which is the result of widespread misinformation and misunderstanding. In truth\, spiders are a beautiful and integral part of our ecosystem. They also have a beautiful and complex mythological history. Learning more about their behavior\, life cycles\, and ecological impact can help us learn about our own place in this world and how to weave their energetic messages into our daily lives. \nJoin two passionate arachnid enthusiasts (Alessandra Dzuba of Oracle Natural Science\, and Jess Ellis of Atropos Curios) for an evening of Spider Magic. This class will include a short lecture and a hands-on tutorial\, all supplies will be provided. \nWe will discuss the biology and ecology of spiders\, as well as their spiritual symbolism and what we can learn from them energetically. We will dispel many of the misguided “facts” about spiders and help to foster a more empathetic view of how they affect our lives. Prepare for a brief crash course in both arachnology and spider mythology which will have you relating to these beautiful creatures in an entirely new way. \nYou will be instructed on how to properly relax and position a beautiful and sustainably sourced tarantula spider. Once your specimen is positioned and ready for drying\, you will be sent home with a shadow frame and natural materials to create a lovely display. \nSome experience working with insect specimens is helpful\, but not required. You will be guided along the process and will go home with new knowledge of how to honor the lives of these animals by preserving them in death. \nSupplies Included: \n-Sustainably sourced spider specimen\n-Small shadow frame\n-Pinning board and pins\n-Natural materials (moss\, etc.)\n-Educational materials \n  \nJess is a Denver-based artist who creates small sculptures and jewelry using elements of nature.\nJess creates imaginative miniature worlds honoring elements of nature and science. These sculptures contain magic in the form of preserved insects\, bones\, stones\, moss\, and plants. Inspired by the natural curiosity assemblages of the Victorian Naturalists and the Wildlife Halls of modern science museums\, Jess hopes to inspire wonder\, curiosity\, and understanding for our natural world. Each piece she creates is a reminder of the beauty that lies in death and its importance in the cycle of life.\nJess teaches classes that stitch together magic\, art\, and science with an aim to inspire her students to to approach the world\, and their practice\, with endless curiosity. This workshop will be taught as practical training for the student with demos\, presentation and lecture\, but with emphasis on hands-on learning and practical skills. Handouts will be included. Spådom – The ability to see spirits\, spells\, and the unseen. Diagnosis\, fortune telling and divination. After a short introduction to the traditional ways of Spådom – such as Årsgång (The Annual Walk)\, Stöpa (Steeping)\, Se I Spegel (Mirror work) – we will dive right into the training and opening of these inherent abilities to perceive these things in the participants.\nDay 3. Naturens Språk – The Languages of Nature and how to use them. The keys to our initiatory practices of the Dragons Blood and the White Serpent lore. We will take a look at inner languages and outer languages that will unlock abilities to spirit travel and do all kinds of practical magical work in the spirit realms. During the Japanese New Year we welcome Toshigami into our homes. Traditions vary as to whether Toshigami is the kami of the New Year\, grain or our collective ancestors\, but the principle remains that we must prepare our homes for their arrival. In this hybrid class\, we will cover the history of this sacred holiday and the rituals associated with it including cleansing and purifying\, cord cutting\, sacred decor\, traditional foods\, and the closing of the spiritual container that is held during this time. This class will include a small tasting of osechi ryori (New Years dishes). For those especially sensitive\, the dishes will be separated to not cross-contaminate allergens. Allergens: fish\, shellfish\, soy\, kelp\, egg\, chestnuts\, legumes. \nAkemi Tsutsui-Kunitake is a visual artist\, karate-ka and creator of Live Deliciously. Based in Denver\, her work is informed by her identity as a third and fourth-generation (sansei-han and yonsei)\, mixed-race Japanese American. Her artwork blends themes of Japanese folklore with Western mysticism. She is inspired by the intersectionality of cultural tradition\, ancestral wisdom and modern identity. She is a lifelong student of Shotokan karate-do under the instruction of her father\, Isao Gary Tsutsui\, at Colorado Budokan.\nAkemi has also been fortunate to train with masters of other karate styles in California\, Hawaii and Japan. As karate embodies so many elements that are integral to the Japanese American experience\, she describes karate as her ethnic and spiritual identity in motion. Carla received both her End of Life Coaching & Death Doula certifications through her course work with the Conscious Dying Institute in Boulder\, Colorado. Carla is passionate about the Death Positive movement and is an advocate of normalizing death and mortality in everyday life. She hopes to bring death back to its scared place in the community through her death work services and discussions. Carla’s strengths in the death work field are being able to approach this part of life with a radical presence of non-judgment\, love and a bold vulnerability. Carla is a end of life care volunteer for Hospice and is currently working towards a Home Funeral Guide certification. When Carla is not hosting death related discussions\, helping families plan for a good death or sitting vigil\, she can be found talking to her house plants or rolling around in laughter with her two daughters.

It is believed to heal the unhealable amongst indigenous practices and is valued across the globe for its multitude of attributes and beauty.\nIn this class\, we will discuss very specific modalities in which to use obsidian either on yourself or as a practitioner of healing modalities. As a knife it can cut away negative energy and vibrations of illness. As a disc or an egg\, it can be used it in trauma work to absorb pain\, inflammation and grief. The uses for obsidian are numerous and we will cover many- including actual examples of a variety of tools that I use within my private practice.\nObsidian is in not a stone of “gentle love and light” and requires a lot from the practitioner to tap into all it has to offer. This lecture will be an exploration of several classic fairy tales from different eras\, authors\, and parts of the world\, that center on trees as protectors and guardians. Some attention will be given to scientific research about the sentience of trees and their behavior\, which will show that what we may think of as fairy-tale magic when it comes to trees may actually incorporate a bit of reality. The hope for the class is that you look at trees with either new or newfound knowledge and appreciation for the way they ground and watch over us. \nSusan Redington Bobby is a practicing witch and the founder of Professor of Words\, LLC\, where she is an online teacher\, an editor\, a writing mentor\, and a tutor. Her specialty is being able to read people on a deeper level through their writing. She is a retired professor of English with expertise in fairy tales\, adolescent literature\, goddess archetypes\, magical realism\, creative writing\, and film studies. She is the author of Beyond His Dark Materials\, the editor of Fairy Tales Reimagined\, and co-editor of The Artemis Archetype in Popular Culture.
