Please ensure you are able to attend the scheduled class time. \nThis class will guide you through some sustainable and responsible ways to work with animals and animal materia in your magical practice. We will touch on a bit of animal symbolism\, mythology\, and energies\, how to sustainably and legally source animal materia (if you wish to do so)\, and how to practically incorporate animal magic into your own magical practice. \nThis class will not follow the typical guides to animal magic. Jess takes a more scientific approach\, one of correlation\, study\, and research. Often\, we turn to books and the writings of others when we are new to a subject\, which is a very important way to begin learning and start building a framework for your practice\, however during this lesson\, we will dive deeper. We will work on how to more heavily rely on our own intuition\, observation\, and personal experiences in order to develop meaningful relationships to the animal world. \nMost of us live in urban environments\, surrounded by concrete and landscaped city parks\, and it may seem almost impossible to find the truly natural world in our surroundings. There is some truth to this\, the contemporary world feels so disconnected from the wild that our ancestors knew. But honestly\, nature surrounds us\, all we need is a shift of perspective. Sit outside anywhere on a nice day\, even deep in the city\, and you will find resilience in nature. Plants growing through concrete\, beetles dutifully searching for food\, and stray cats or dogs surviving despite it all. It is so wonderful and healing to get deep into the mountains of our state\, hearing the calls of native birds that sound exotic to city dwellers\, or witnessing a family of deer beyond the trees along a trail… but there is something equally as wondrous about watching city crows scavenge from dumpsters behind a restaurant\, or butterflies and bees pollinating the carefully curated gardens in a city square. These are the lessons that we need right now. We are all dutifully surviving in the circumstances of the contemporary world at this moment\, and the animals that have been nearly pushed out by human civilization have been doing this for much longer. \nFollowing the lecture\, we will be practicing our observational and intuitive skills by connecting with animal materia first-hand. You will also be provided with several materials to create your own charm bag to honor and harness the spirit of the silk moth\, working with the energies of metamorphosis and adaptability. Animal\, herbal\, and mineral materials will be provided for you to choose from. It is not required\, but feel free to bring materials from your personal collection to add to your own bag. \nIt is highly recommended to bring a journal\, notebook\, or piece of paper and a writing utensil. This will be helpful in lecture\, and we will also be completing an exercise prior to crafting our charm bag that will require writing down your thoughts. \nYOUR INSTRUCTOR: \nJess is a Denver-based artist who creates small sculptures and jewelry using elements of nature.\nJess creates imaginative miniature worlds honoring elements of nature and science. The growing season of summer has come to an end and the harvest is nearing completion. This is a time to celebrate and give thanks for that which is plentiful in our lives. Join Sterling Moon for this autumnal practice in which we will create spell bundles for gratitude and abundance\, followed by a meditation practice to honor the season. You are welcome to bring a yoga mat\, blanket\, or pillow. I will do a deep dive into the meaning and mythology of Bastet\, and explore her history\, symbolism\, power\, and protection as a way to help us strengthen our connection to her. We will also learn some ritual ideas and spellwork that will call to her and bring her into our lives (and the lives of our cats). As someone who has had a relationship with her for years\, I am happy to relate some stories of how she has shown up for me and mine and been a great comfort when I have had to help any of my little ones cross the veil. How can folk practitioners and witches interact with and petition these beings that are well-known for being Catholic? How does Saint magic interact with folk magic that is syncretized with Catholicism\, and can folks who aren’t Catholic even work with Saints? \nJoin Frankie Castanea for this virtual conversation into Saints as holy beings\, energetic signatures\, faces for earlier entities\, and their role in Italian-American and other folk magics. We will talk further about utilizing Christian methods of talking to Saints\, but also methods that stem from folk magic and folk Catholicism\, beginning to incorporate Saints into your practice\, and more. \n  \nYOUR INSTRUCTOR \nFrankie Castanea\, also known as Chaotic Witch Aunt\, is a practicing folk witch\, animist\, Italian American folk practitioner\, and spirit worker.  They have been on a journey of reconnection to culture and ancestral practices for almost five years now\, a practicing witch and diviner for almost a decade. They learn from being in community with other Italian-Americans and folk practitioners\, their own spirits\, and are driven by their ancestors in almost all things they do\, sharing their ways of reconnection and reconstruction via Instagram\, Youtube\, Patreon and their blog\, Chaotic Folk Magic\, through their website (chaoticwitchaunt.com). They run a small online shop of ancestral and folk magic guided wares\, believes in the power of the color red\, and reads tarot\, Italian playing cards\, and offers professional spell consultations at Ritualcravt in Wheat Ridge\, Colorado. This meet-up is designed to be a facilitated space for those interested in tarot\, not a “class.” There will be two facilitators\, current readers here at Ritualcravt – Andrea Carla and Reese Quinn. \nTarot meet-ups will start and end with reflections on the past month’s tarot pulls\, a themed topic discussion\, and then will be driven by you! Your facilitators will be there to offer discussion areas\, hold space for questions\, encourage “practice” readings\, and provide time for intentional community building as it fits the group. \nPlease come with your tarot deck and your curiosity! \n  \nYOUR INSTRUCTORS: \nAndrea’s fascination with reading cards began from a young age after being introduced to the Smith-Waite Tarot. From then on\, she began to explore different methods of divination and fell in love with Lenormand\, a system of cartomancy originating in late 18th century Europe. Andrea’s style of reading cards could be described as pragmatic and deeply rooted in tradition\, influenced by a true reverence for the sibyls of the past. As a teacher\, Andrea has both an academic and scholarly approach to the way that she presents her classes as well as sharing from her experiences and gnosis as a professional reader. She considers the Tarot to be a book of esoteric mysteries and has spent years of her life in studying and peeling back its many layers to share the knowledge and wisdom embedded in every card. \nReese Quinn (she/they) is a tarot and astrology reader and what they lovingly call a practical witch. They have a strong awareness of the crossroads between astrology\, cartomancy\, and elemental practices. You’ll note that Reese embraces their queer\, intersectional identities when both teaching and reading. Reese has been a reader at Ritualcravt for over two years and has studied with well-known witches like Lindsay Mack and Pam Grossman and well-respected teachers locally in Denver. Registration closes one hour prior to class beginning. \n  \nYokai are supernatural entities from Japanese folklore.  They may take the form of apparitions\, creatures or phenomena.  In this class\, we will look at the spiritual frameworks that have led to our understanding of yokai\, how they have evolved through Japanese history leading up to pop culture depictions\, the different types of yokai and protective superstitions.  This class will include elements of storytelling to complement the lecture.  It is recommended\, but not mandatory to have taken Daily Japanese Animism & Majutsu as a primer for this class. \n  \nYOUR INSTRUCTOR \nAkemi Tsutsui-Kunitake is a visual artist\, karate-ka and creator of Live Deliciously. Based in Denver\, her work is informed by her identity as a third and fourth-generation (sansei-han and yonsei)\, mixed-race Japanese American. Her artwork blends themes of Japanese folklore with Western mysticism. She is inspired by the intersectionality of cultural tradition\, ancestral wisdom and modern identity. She is a lifelong student of Shotokan karate-do under the instruction of her father\, Isao Gary Tsutsui\, at Colorado Budokan. \nAkemi has also been fortunate to train with masters of other karate styles in California\, Hawaii and Japan. As karate embodies so many elements that are integral to the Japanese American experience\, she describes karate as her ethnic and spiritual identity in motion. With a formal education in Ethnic Studies\, Akemi has worked in the fields of culturally specific education\, advocacy and holistic health. She has continued her studies through courses on Japanese energetic healing\, Shinto\, deep ancestral work and radical community care. Akemi is a frequent collaborator with the Japanese Arts Network as a Cultural Consultant and artistic partner.

Humans have been honoring the dead and keeping the legacy of lost loved ones alive for thousands of years. \n• \nIn this class\, we will explore the topic of ancestral veneration from a cross cultural perspective\, as well as how to build a relationship and spiritual practice with your own ancestors in contemporary times. \n• \nThe Ancestors play more of a significant role in our lives than we may realize. In this presentation we will also learn about precautionary measures in ancestral work as well as learning the differences between what makes a venerated ancestor vs. in-tranquil spirits and how to safe guard your practice. From cleansing\, building an altar\, and techniques in communication\, you will gain a firm understanding in the complexities and nuances of ancestral work including a discussion about ancestral and intergenerational trauma. \n• \nAt the end of the presentation we will also fix and prepare a candle for your ancestors to help you begin your journey in ancestral veneration. \n  \nYOUR INSTRUCTOR: \nAndrea’s fascination with reading cards began from a young age after being introduced to the Smith-Waite Tarot. From then on\, she began to explore different methods of divination and fell in love with Lenormand\, a system of cartomancy originating in late 18th century Europe. Andrea’s style of reading cards could be described as pragmatic and deeply rooted in tradition\, influenced by a true reverence for the sibyls of the past. \n As a teacher\, Andrea has both an academic and scholarly approach to the way that she presents her classes as well as sharing from her experiences and gnosis as a professional reader. She considers the Tarot to be a book of esoteric mysteries and has spent years of her life in studying and peeling back its many layers to share the knowledge and wisdom embedded in every card.

Registration closes one hour prior to class beginning. \n  \nHaving taught several classes on these films apart from one another\, I thought that in honor of the current Halloween season I would offer a class covering both Bram Stoker’s Dracula (Dir. Francis Ford Coppola) and Only Lovers Left Alive (Dir. Jim Jarmusch)\, focusing in particular on the love stories at the heart of each film. Each story incorporates captivating themes\, such as forbidden love and cursed immortality\, as well as fairy-tale motifs and archetypes. In fact\, just as the world of fairy tales contains both classic and contemporary variants\, Count Dracula and Mina Harker’s love story is “classic”\, while Adam and Eve’s is “contemporary”\, utilizing post-modern elements and deconstructing various source texts. I’ll be talking about intertextuality\, looking at how each film references and reimagines literary inspirations\, costume design\, setting and atmosphere\, and what it is about these iconic relationships that holds us in thrall year after year\, sending us back for repeat viewings of our comfort films in which “Love never dies.” \n  \nYOUR INSTRUCTOR \nSusan Redington Bobby\, the founder of Professor of Words\, LLC\, is an online teacher\, a freelance editor\, a writing mentor\, and a tutor. Her specialty is being able to read people on a deeper level through their writing\, and she has recently completed a certificate course on integrative somatic trauma therapy.  She is a retired professor of English with expertise in fairy tales\, adolescent literature\, goddess archetypes\, magical realism\, creative writing\, and film studies. She is the author of Beyond His Dark Materials\, the editor of Fairy Tales Reimagined\, and co-editor of The Artemis Archetype in Popular Culture. The Series Editor of Tales from Fiddler’s Green\, she also occasionally publishes creative fiction. She is currently studying the Bardic Course in Druidry from OBOD. She maintains Mellie’s Grove\, a certified NWF backyard wildlife habitat that is home to a rescued and small stabilized cat family and all manner of wildlife.
