SUMMARY:{IN PERSON} OSHOGATSU: THE JAPANESE NEW YEAR

Please ensure you are able to attend the scheduled class time. \n  \nAlongside the summer ancestor festival of Obon\, Oshogatsu is one of the most sacred of Japanese animist and magical traditions. During the Japanese New Year we welcome Toshigami into our homes. Traditions vary as to whether Toshigami is the kami of the New Year\, grain or our collective ancestors\, but the principle remains that we must prepare our homes for their arrival. In this hybrid class\, we will cover the history of this sacred holiday and the rituals associated with it including cleansing and purifying\, cord cutting\, sacred decor\, traditional foods\, and the closing of the spiritual container that is held during this time. This class will include a small tasting of osechi ryori (New Years dishes). For those especially sensitive\, the dishes will be separated to not cross-contaminate allergens. Allergens: fish\, shellfish\, soy\, kelp\, egg\, chestnuts\, legumes. \nAkemi Tsutsui-Kunitake is a visual artist\, karate-ka and creator of Live Deliciously. Based in Denver\, her work is informed by her identity as a third and fourth-generation (sansei-han and yonsei)\, mixed-race Japanese American. Her artwork blends themes of Japanese folklore with Western mysticism. She is inspired by the intersectionality of cultural tradition\, ancestral wisdom and modern identity. She is a lifelong student of Shotokan karate-do under the instruction of her father\, Isao Gary Tsutsui\, at Colorado Budokan.\nAkemi has also been fortunate to train with masters of other karate styles in California\, Hawaii and Japan. As karate embodies so many elements that are integral to the Japanese American experience\, she describes karate as her ethnic and spiritual identity in motion. With a formal education in Ethnic Studies\, Akemi has worked in the fields of culturally specific education\, advocacy and holistic health. She has continued her studies through courses on Japanese energetic healing\, Shinto\, deep ancestral work and radical community care. Akemi is a frequent collaborator with the Japanese Arts Network as a Cultural Consultant and artistic partner. \n  \n

Please ensure you are able to attend the scheduled class time. \nRegistration will close one hour prior to class starting. \n  \nPast Life Meditation for Beginners\nWe will move backwards through time in a guided meditation to explore a previous lifetime that is affecting us in our current life today. Through exploring our previous lives\, we can move towards healing\, reclaiming\, and releasing in our current life. We can gather new understandings of patterns and behaviours\, reclaim gifts and strengths\, and even end commitments made in past lives that are no longer serving us.\nWe will begin with a brief discussion and explanation of past life work\, move into the meditation\, and end with a bit of processing and discussion. This meditation is best suited for people newer to this work.\nNo experience is necessary\, just come with an open mind\, a quiet space in your home to do this work\, a notebook and pen to journal after the meditation. Dress comfortably! \n  \nMissy Johanna Rhysing is an American woman practicing Nordic folk traditions in Denver\, CO and Mpls\, MN. Her people hail from Scandinavia\, Bohemia/Czech Republic\, France and England. She places great importance on working with our ancestral root cultures as a means of reclaiming and reweaving folk magic and medicine to improve our lives and our relationships with the lands we live on today.\nMissy’s trainings include Trolldom\, Nordic spirituality and animism\, Swedish massage\, past life regression\, meditation\, shiatsu\, tattooing\, folk herbal and nutritional support\, and more. Missy facilitates community sauna ceremonies and is passionate about sauna tradition and culture. She has been offered the name Völva\, or cunning woman\, and holds that close to her heart with great honor. She carries immense gratitude for her mentors\, spirit council\, and peers for the doors that have been opened to her and the blessings she has received.
