Please ensure you are able to attend the scheduled class time. \n  \nUsing the framework of Hanafuda playing cards\, we will look at various botanicals and their spiritual and historical significance in Japanese culture.  The class will include a history of Hanafuda and how it used in different games today.  Each suit in the deck represents a month and is assigned a seasonal botanical.  In this first class we will look at the first quarter of the year: January – pine\, February – plum\, March – cherry.  Participants are encouraged to bring their own Hanafuda decks if they already own one\, but possession of a deck is not required for the class\, as the content will be primarily focused on symbolism. If time allows\, during the informal discussion session that follows the structured content\, attendees are welcome to play cards.\n\nYOUR INSTRUCTOR: \nAkemi is a Nikkei storyteller\, writer\, teacher and visual/experiential creative.  She has familial roots in Taiji-cho\, Wakayama-ken\, the neighborhood of Asakusa in Tōkyō-to and Terminal Island. By delving into a selection of tales from different cultures\, tellers\, and traditions\, the class will center on the way authors describe natural elements and weave their meanings\, both symbolic and folkloric\, into the stories. Truly this set of tales would not be as powerful were it not for such a cast of varied supporting characters from the natural world. This class offers a new appreciation for every petal\, every leaf\, and every stem\, captured in both words and images. Note: those who took the Fairy Tales 101 class in January may find this to be a fun and engaging follow-up class. \nTwo sliding scale options for tickets. \n  \nYOUR INSTRUCTOR \nSusan Redington Bobby\, the founder of Professor of Words\, LLC\, is an online teacher\, a freelance editor\, a writing mentor\, and a tutor. Her specialty is being able to read people on a deeper level through their writing\, and she has recently completed a certificate course on integrative somatic trauma therapy.  She is a retired professor of English with expertise in fairy tales\, adolescent literature\, goddess archetypes\, magical realism\, creative writing\, and film studies. We will go over several prominent animals and their magical and spiritual associations through the lens of our common folk ancestors of Scandinavia\, both as animal energies and as materia for spells and spirituality. We will also discuss Fylgias\, or animal spirits\, and we will go through a procedure to discover a personal Fylgia- one that you can continue to develop a relationship with long after class is over. \nYOUR INSTRUCTOR: \nMissy Johanna Rhysing is an American woman practicing Nordic folk traditions in Denver\, CO and Mpls\, MN. Her people hail from Scandinavia\, Bohemia/Czech Republic\, France and England. Hone your skills and visit with your Guides\, within a circle of like-minded\, supportive humans. These practices – deeply personal though they are – were born and flourished within communities – humans gathering together in united energies and intentions\, through hundreds of generations\, in all times and places. When we circle together\, we’re a continuing part of that. \nNot a class\, but a circle\, we’ll generally have time for several journeys: first on a theme of your own choosing\, then others with varying intentions\, applications\, and styles of working.
