Registration closes one hour prior to class starting. \n  \nJourney through the Zodiac and the natal chart one chunk at a time\, starting at the beginning – Aries\, Taurus\, and Gemini. \nIn this series\, we will explore the zodiac alongside the houses based on the traditional whole sign house system. It is easy to overlook the importance of the houses in a chart\, but understanding house significations WITH the zodiac\, unlocks another layer of meaning\, symbolism\, and divination in our astrological interpretations. From the haints and kitchen witchery to the pacts made at the crossroads\, this lively tradition holds secrets that are seen with the naked eye. This course is designed to explore the herbal and non-herbal materia that this folk magic tradition uses in everyday practice. From the soothing herbs of lavender\, to the ensnarement of Devil’s Shoestring\, we will be discussing the uses of the materia and what days of the week to use said materials. \n  \nYOUR INSTRUCTOR \nGabriel Varzalyi-Lopez is a biracial Virginia-born folk practitioner\, a devotee to his ancestors\, spirits of nature\, and the God and Goddess of his mother and father. He is a seer\, diviner\, spiritual medium\, and conjurer trained in the Marigny neighborhood of New Orleans. We will go over several prominent animals and their magical and spiritual associations through the lens of our common folk ancestors of Scandinavia\, both as animal energies and as materia for spells and spirituality. We will also discuss Fylgias\, or animal spirits\, and we will go through a procedure to discover a personal Fylgia- one that you can continue to develop a relationship with long after class is over. \nYOUR INSTRUCTOR: \nMissy Johanna Rhysing is an American woman practicing Nordic folk traditions in Denver\, CO and Mpls\, MN. Her people hail from Scandinavia\, Bohemia/Czech Republic\, France and England. We are seeking self-care\, community\, and creative expression in a group that will welcome and encourage conversation and connection\, though there is no requirement to speak or to even have your screen on if you’d rather be anonymous and just “be” with us! \nLet’s face it\, our world demands constant productivity often for the sake of others. I often think that we are led to believe “how can we craft at a time like this?” But this is precisely the moment to engage in what makes us feel happy and at peace. We will reclaim the energy and beauty of crafting for the sake of personal fulfillment and relaxation. All skill levels and craft mediums are welcome in these gatherings that will be like book clubs\, but for crafts. We will set a theme for each session so you can consider it or even journal on it before attending\, and in our meetings\, you will have an opportunity to share with others\, if you choose\, while I will facilitate. I would love to help you reframe this month by focusing on Hestia\, a goddess of hearth (which is Latin for focus) and home\, who cultivates wisdom and periods of connection with others on a similar path. \nHestia and Vesta\, her Roman counterpart\, are symbolized in the flame\, dancing in the center of the home or other spiritual place. Learning about her and her archetype can provide you with the tools to make February be a month where you focus on what you need around you to feel as secure and safe as possible. We will focus on what is integral in your mind and body\, what resonates as most meaningful\, and use these touchstones as a guide to curate your own personal safe space\, which protects you and makes you feel whole. Hestia can teach us how to slow down\, to mindfully and meditatively complete our tasks. In this iteration\, we will go over correspondences between the planets + zodiac and the body systems. Her archetype is often connected with those who have undergone trauma and found a way to rise above it\, becoming stronger and more resilient. But sometimes we are triggered into the realization of how our innocence has been irrevocably harmed\, and our wounds\, though healed over\, still reside deep within us. Through them we can be dragged back into periods of overwhelming anxiety and depression. \nWhat I would like to offer is a way to make those two sometimes dueling sides of our natures meet and collaborate to make us whole. I want to help you cultivate a way to connect with that innocent maiden side and find its enormous power so that being pulled away from your tough-as-nails dark goddess of the underworld energy doesn’t break you down\, but instead re-invigorates you. \nIn this class\, I’ll cover aspects of the dual natures of the Persephone archetype\, apply that knowledge and understanding to our own experiences of lost innocence and cultivated experience\, and suggest ways we can reframe our connections with our “pre-trauma” selves that will empower us. Because the early tales which came from multiple tellers were created for adults by adults\, sex and violence often were integral parts\, either increased or toned down based on the tellers. Literary criticism\, especially different types of critical theory\, will be explained in an accessible way to help you discover different ways to read the same text based on the lens you apply and the questions you ask (a bonus is that you can apply the same kinds of lenses to other works you read!). Even for those of us who love the cozy time of colder temperatures and sun setting earlier\, with tea and books and various hobbies\, the holiday season itself can ensnare us in feelings of isolation\, depression\, sadness\, and grief\, especially if there are associations with this time of year in terms of past traumas or missing those who are no longer with us to share these times. I would like to try to help people in dealing with these difficult emotions by considering the healing magic of traveling through labyrinths. \nIn this class\, you will discover how the labyrinth serves as a symbol of the journey inward\, leading us to the center of our being where we confront our shadows and emerge wiser and more self-aware. We will examine both the Cretan and Greek depictions of Ariadne and consider ways we can connect with her energy and call upon her as a guide when we are deep in shadow work. We will consider visualizations and simple prompts to help you identify a place in your life where you will benefit from “walking” a labyrinth to its center and back. We will learn about the three main branches of tasseomancy\, and at the end\, we will hold a practicum on how to do a tea leaf reading! We will be diving into the deep and rich history of the modalities of the natural world\, learning about each modality used in this work. Please come prepared with a teacup\, saucer\, and loose-leaf black tea for the lecture and practicum. \n  \nYOUR INSTRUCTOR \nGabriel Varzalyi-Lopez is a southern folk practitioner who is a devotee to his ancestors\, nature spirits\, and the God and Goddess of his mother and father. He is a seer\, diviner\, spiritual medium\, and conjuror trained here in New Orleans\, Louisiana. His practice and divinations have always been centered on community\, resilience\, and compassion. He has worked in New Orleans\, Denver\, and Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania\, where he currently calls home. Born into a lineage of witches\, orthodox priests\, farmers\, artists\, and rebels\, he understands the blessing that has been placed upon his shoulders. An adventurous spirit\, Gabriel feels and hears the call of Spirit through the wind and winding southern brooks\, and on the highest mountain peaks\, observing and watching the simple magics that each of us cherishes in our everyday lives.

In fact\, fairy tale critic Maria Tatar in The Hard Facts of the Grimms Fairy Tales explains that the Grimms’ tales feature 3 distinct types of “ogres”: “beasts and monsters”\, “social deviants”\, and “women”\, with women (perhaps unsurprisingly) making up the largest category. In this group are witches and wise women\, mothers’-in-law\, and stepmothers\, all of whom walk a supposedly villainous path and are cast as so-called “evil” characters. However\, contemporary fairy tale writers have deconstructed this pattern. This class will offer a sampling of modern-day witches and wise women in fairy tales by introducing participants to stories that feature witches in more complex\, nuanced\, and powerful roles. Learn all about how these depictions reinforce the immense self-sufficiency and resiliency of matriarchy.\nThose interested in and/or taking the class should reach out to the instructor (susanredingtonbobby@professorofwords.com) to get a list of links of literary works so they have time to read them before attending. The class will cover a brief history of the classic fairy tale witch and then move to a discussion of the changing contemporary views\, with time available for discussion of the works provided. \n  \nYOUR INSTRUCTOR \nSusan Redington Bobby\, the founder of Professor of Words\, LLC\, is an online teacher\, a freelance editor\, a writing mentor\, and a tutor. We are seeking self-care\, community\, and creative expression in a group that will welcome and encourage conversation and connection\, though there is no requirement to speak or to even have your screen on if you’d rather be anonymous and just “be” with us! \nLet’s face it\, our world demands constant productivity often for the sake of others. I often think that we are led to believe “how can we craft at a time like this?” But this is precisely the moment to engage in what makes us feel happy and at peace. We will reclaim the energy and beauty of crafting for the sake of personal fulfillment and relaxation. All skill levels and craft mediums are welcome in these gatherings that will be like book clubs\, but for crafts. We will set a theme for each session so you can consider it or even journal on it before attending\, and in our meetings\, you will have an opportunity to share with others\, if you choose\, while I will facilitate. I will share a keynote presentation on Saint Lucia and Yule\, two of the most prominent celebrations\, as well as other important timings and events during the Winter season. We will go over folk magic\, rituals\, timings and ancestral practices we can utilize to bring the magic and mystery of the Winter Tide into our modern lives on the lands we live on today.\n\n\nYOUR INSTRUCTOR:\n\nMissy Johanna Rhysing is a Swedish-American woman who grew up in the Swedish diaspora in Minnesota\, and is the owner and founder of Ritualcravt in Colorado. Her people hail from Scandinavia\, Bohemia/Czech Republic\, France and England. She places great importance on working with our ancestral root cultures as a means of reweaving folk magic and traditions to improve our lives and our relationships with the lands we live on today. \nMissy’s trainings include Trolldom\, Nordic spirituality and animism\, Swedish massage\, past life regression\, meditation\, shiatsu\, tattooing\, folk herbal and nutritional support\, and more. She facilitates community sauna ceremonies and is passionate about sauna culture. Registration closes one hour prior to class beginning. \n  \nHaving taught several classes on these films apart from one another\, I thought that in honor of the current Halloween season I would offer a class covering both Bram Stoker’s Dracula (Dir. Francis Ford Coppola) and Only Lovers Left Alive (Dir. Jim Jarmusch)\, focusing in particular on the love stories at the heart of each film. Each story incorporates captivating themes\, such as forbidden love and cursed immortality\, as well as fairy-tale motifs and archetypes. In fact\, just as the world of fairy tales contains both classic and contemporary variants\, Count Dracula and Mina Harker’s love story is “classic”\, while Adam and Eve’s is “contemporary”\, utilizing post-modern elements and deconstructing various source texts.
