European herbal medicine as we know it is rooted in the walled gardens of monasteries and convents. Even the study of genetics began in a cloister garden. These gardens, tended by their quiet, prayerful inhabitants are one beam of light Christianity has shared. New medicines were discovered, old medicines were shared with the needy, and time was given to the plants in ways that were previously difficult. The cloisters became living cauldrons of ancient magics… folk medicines from far different paths shared space and were allowed to evolve. The cloisters were quiet, the plant’s voices could be heard, the monks could contemplate and experiment and… write down their findings. For the first time in history, these medicines and magics could be recorded and shared.

In this Green Witch series Michelle (Spring Plant Sale grower extraordinaire) will be teaming up with witches who work within many different magical paths. For this Cloister Garden Class Leonora McCabe, grimoire and ceremonial magic specialist, will be joining Michelle. Together they will help you plan beautifully powerful gardens. Specific plants, suited to Colorado’s climate, will be suggested and planting and harvesting techniques discussed. Whether you will be planting in a special area of your yard or just a patio planter, Michelle and Leonora will help you design a truly special ‘garden’.

Time will be set aside to create and ‘dress’ a magical token for the garden which we will bless in circle.

Students will leave with a handful of seedlings to get their mini cloister gardens off to a strong start.

Leonora McCabe is a visual artist, educator and tarot reader at Ritualcravt. She has over fifteen years of
experience with ceremonial magic in group and solitary settings.
She offers classes in ceremonial magic, demonology and grimoire magic. Her classes are founded on their personal research into the historical and anthropological origins and methods of magic.
Leonora teaches using a project-based approach that inspires creativity and independence in her students.

Michelle VanderHouwen is the owner of Oak and Hawthorn and provides the plant babies for Ritualcravt’s annual plant sale.
Throughout all her years, she has studied art as a window into Spirit and the psyche, and Nature has been her church. Michelle believes that our hands are magnificent communicators. When we let them dig, sculpt, draw, scrape, tie and sew, we are sending messages to and from Heart Center. Our hands, full of sensation but devoid of reasoning, can create pure, honest prayer. In Michelle’s classes she teaches, with a variety of tools, different ways of accessing Spirit using our hands and hearts. Her goal is to help us all access the knowing we had at birth. Michelle is deeply knowledgeable about the spiritual wisdom of nature, studied Shamanic Herbalism with Darcey Blue, and walks with the soul of a Witch.
