Winter is often thought of as a seasonal call to slow down, turn inward, and focus on what is most important. Namely our loved ones, health, and home. In this beginner-friendly workshop you’ll learn the age-old tradition of casting spells with fiber and intention by hand embroidering a charm bag that can support your wellbeing through the dark and cold months. We’ll discuss correspondences for your magical needs in this season so you can fill your charm with a personalized combination of dried herbs, flowers, and crystals. Then, one stitch at a time, you’ll imbue your sachet with magic and meaning through the ritual of pulling needle and thread. No prior embroidery experience necessary.

All materials provided including:
-wool blend felt
-cotton embroidery floss
-crystals (such as amethyst & rose quartz)
-dried herbs and flowers (such as cinnamon bark, lavender, orange peel, & sage)
-needles, scissors, thimbles, & any notions required for stitching

YOUR INSTRUCTOR:

Catalena Eskey (they/them) calls themselves a recovering perfectionist. This has strongly informed the ways that they teach, make art, and move through the world. In early adulthood, chronic illness forced them to confront their deeply held stories about motivation and self-worth. Now, as a yoga teacher, witch, artist, and human living with disability, both their life and work are a constant reminder of the need to slow down.

Catalena’s artistic and spell work primarily explores fiber manipulation. Though they love many techniques, the tactile experience of pulling a needle and thread is one process that is especially satisfying and meditative for them. They view crafting as a form of divine creativity and a place to practice dreaming, play, and UN-doing.

They are inspired by the earth, color, and small things that feel magical, or that give respite to spirit. They often work with themes of nature, death, rebirth, and vulnerability. However, they also think that it is incredibly important to make things that don’t have a profound meaning beyond the joy of creating them.

In this productivity-focused world, taking time to pause and introspect is a form of resistance. Catalena believes magic is most alive in things that encourage people to reflect on our interconnectedness and inherent worth.
