When Guillermo del Toro pitched The Devil’s Backbone, he said, “I want to do a film about some kids in an orphanage during the Spanish Civil War–and oh yeah, one of them’s dead.” Years later, in the film Pan’s Labyrinth, we hear a voice-over open the film by describing a young girl who came from another world, suffered in this one, then died. Though their lives are tragically ephemeral, these children form the moral and symbolic centers of each story and teach us about the immense power of magic.
Many do not know these films are connected, in that del Toro sees Pan’s Labryinth as a sequel to The Devil’s Backbone, but they are deeply entwined, through time period, historical events, politics, child protagonists, life vs. death, “fairy” godparent figures, themes, and even elements of the cinematography, with imagery and sets designed to create mirror imagery from one film to the other. Join me for a very thorough look at these two films and learn more about each of them both separately and linked together; discover deeper symbolism, meanings, and develop even more appreciation for the genius that is Guillermo del Toro.
